Style on a Shoestring: How to Decorate on a Budget

I recently shared a project I worked on last year, which was a salon called Kind Hair in the centre of Nottingham – check it out on my Insta feed. The budget for this project wasn’t the largest and Nicole, the owner, was keen to do a lot of the work herself. We opted for paint finishes to create zoning, as this is an inexpensive way of changing a space. It got me thinking … creating a beautiful, calming space, whether its a home or salon, doesn’t have to break the bank when you can decorate on a budget.

At Plot Design, we believe that good interiors are less about how much you spend, and more about how intentionally you style your space. With a few smart choices and a Scandinavian mindset—where less is more and every item has purpose—you can create a space that feels curated, cosy, and effortlessly stylish.

Whether you’ve just moved in or you’re looking to refresh a tired room, here’s how to decorate your home on a budget—without compromising on taste or quality.

1. Start with a Plan (Not a Purchase)

Impulse buys often lead to clutter and mismatched styles. Before spending anything, take stock of what you already have and get clear on how you want your home to feel. Creating a simple moodboard—via Pinterest or even on paper—can help guide your decisions.

Ask yourself:

  • What is the purpose of this room?
  • How do I want it to feel—calm, light, grounded?
  • What do I already own that suits this vision?

A little planning goes a long way towards avoiding costly mistakes.

2. Neutral Foundations, Colourful Layers

Consider a neutral base—think soft whites, muted greys, warm taupes and beiges. These tones make a space feel brighter and more open, and they create a timeless foundation to build on. Colour can then be added with textiles and artwork (which are then easily changeable should your tastes change.)

3. Thrift, Upcycle, and Shop Second-hand

Scandinavian interiors often blend modern minimalism with vintage charm. That doesn’t come from buying new—it comes from hunting for character.

Look for:

  • Local charity shops and second-hand furniture stores
  • Facebook Marketplace
  • Car boot sales and antique fairs

Search for items with strong “bones”—clean lines, quality materials, and potential. A fresh coat of paint, new handles, or a sanded-down surface can completely transform an old piece.

4. DIY Where You Can

You don’t have to be a DIY expert to make an impact. Small, creative touches can personalise your home and stretch your budget.

Try:

  • Painting a wall or shelving
  • Making simple curtains or cushion covers from affordable fabrics
  • Creating your own wall art

DIY adds a layer of warmth and individuality that no shop-bought decor can quite replicate.

5. Spend Smart, Not Big

Decorating on a budget doesn’t mean buying the cheapest version of everything—it means knowing where to spend well. Invest in items that will see daily use or form the heart of a space, such as:

  • A comfortable, neutral-toned sofa
  • A dining table made from solid wood
  • Good-quality lighting to set the mood

These pieces don’t have to be expensive—just well-chosen. Shop during sales, look out for showroom clearance items, or consider quality second-hand alternatives.

6. Add Texture, Not Clutter

In Scandi design, richness comes from layers of texture, not lots of objects. Keep surfaces clear, and focus instead on tactile contrast.

For example:

  • A wool throw over crisp cotton bedding
  • A woven basket next to a smooth ceramic vase
  • Linen curtains that gently diffuse the light

These elements give a room depth and warmth, while still feeling pared-back and considered.

7. Let Nature In

One of the most affordable (and most effective) ways to decorate is by bringing the outdoors inside. Scandi homes often feature natural, organic elements—branches in vases, potted greenery, or bowls of found objects like shells or pebbles.

Ideas to try:

  • A bunch of eucalyptus or dried flowers in a neutral vase
  • A few trailing houseplants for height and movement
  • A large leafy plant in a seagrass basket to anchor a corner

Nature provides both beauty and calm—at little to no cost.

8. Rearrange What You Have

Often, the best makeover costs nothing. A simple shift in layout can make a tired space feel fresh and functional again.

Try:

  • Moving furniture away from walls to create flow
  • Swapping rugs or lamps between rooms
  • Re-styling your shelves with fewer, better-chosen items

Play with negative space, focus on balance, and aim for a feeling of calm—not overcrowding.
